Tips for RV Camping:
A Simple Guide to a Smooth Summer
The weather’s getting nicer, and you’re starting to get your RV prepared for all the adventures you’re going to go on this summer.
As you begin mapping out your trips, the first step is making sure you have optimal insurance coverage.
In most cases, your traditional auto insurance coverage won’t cover your RV if it’s motorized and self-powered. If your RV is a camper, fifth wheel, or pop up trailer that is towed behind your vehicle, then most auto policies for your vehicle will extend liability coverage to what’s being towed, but not physical damage coverage to what you are towing. For example, your auto insurance carrier will cover damage your trailer does to someone in the lane next to you, but they won’t cover the damage to your trailer. For this reason, it’s critical to make sure you aren’t leaving any gaps in your insurance coverage before you hit the road.
What Does RV Insurance Cover?
Similar to auto insurance policies, there are several different types of RV coverage. The bare minimum of insurance policies cover liability. This provides financial and legal protection in case an accident occurs and the other driver or their vehicle gets injured or damaged. However, some states also require RV insurance to include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, which covers your losses if you are involved in a collision with a driver who has no, or very little, insurance.
In addition to the required components, RV coverage can also include other endorsements:
- Collision coverage: Can repair or replace your RV in the event of a collision.
- Comprehensive coverage: Covers your RV in accidents that aren’t collisions, such as extreme weather events, vandalism or fire.
- Personal Belongings coverage: This covers the belongings inside the RV if they are damaged or stolen.
- Vacation Liability: Provides additional liability coverage when your RV is parked in a campground or motor home park. For example, someone might fall on the step and get injured.
Additionally, RV coverage can include roadside assistance in case of flat tires or other basic RV repairs that could happen when traveling.
How much Does RV Insurance Cost?
RV Insurance costs are different for everyone. Many different factors can affect your insurance rates. Based on your location, your RV’s year, make and model, and the type of coverage being provided insurance rates can vary. Getting a personalized quote can give you the most accurate information.
